History of Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple, Varanasi
The Sankat Mochan Temple has a history that dates back to the early 16th century. Founded by the revered saint Goswami Tulsidas, who was not only a devotee of Lord Hanuman but also the author of the epic Ramcharitmanas, the temple has been a focal point of spiritual activities for centuries.
According to the history of the temple, it is believed that Tulsidas saw Lord Hanuman at this place. In the late 16th century, Tulsidas built a statue of Hanuman underneath a sacred fig tree, and since then, this place has come to be known as Sankat Mochan Hanuman.
Its foundation was laid with the aim of creating a place where devotees could seek solace from their troubles and find a connection with the divine.
A significant incident occurred on March 7, 2006, when one of three explosions occurred at the Temple during the aarti, attended by hundreds of worshippers. As a precautionary measure, a permanent police chowki was established within the temple premises.
