About 100 aircraft — Rafale, Su-30MKI, LCA Tejas, Chinooks and the Surya Kiran aerobatic team — are set to fly over the river and the ghats of Kashi. Here is everything you need to know: dates, timings, aircraft, where to watch, what is closed, and how to plan your stay.
Updated . Timings and arrangements can change at short notice, so please confirm with the IAF and UP government announcements.
The basics
The Varanasi Airshow 2026 is the Indian Air Force’s “Wings Over Ganges” aerial display, staged over the River Ganga and the ghats of Kashi to mark the IAF’s 94th anniversary. It is the first IAF air show held above the Ganga — last year’s edition was over the Brahmaputra at Guwahati.
The programme is organised by the Indian Air Force (Central Air Command, Prayagraj) with the Uttar Pradesh government and the Varanasi administration. Namo Ghat, the recently built riverfront, serves as the main control centre, while the aircraft fly along the river toward Assi Ghat.
Officials expect enormous crowds — about 20 to 30 lakh visitors over the display days — which is why the city has put barricades, diversions and closures in place. The sections below cover the schedule, the aircraft, where to watch and what to avoid.
Unofficial guide. Kashi Yatra is a Varanasi travel team, not the organiser. We do not sell airshow tickets and cannot arrange access to restricted zones.

Plan around the dates
Three display days, one big finale. Every day follows the same noon-to-2 PM window.
The first of the three display days. Rehearsal-period restrictions overlap with this date.
The second flying day. Same noon-to-2 PM window.
PM Modi is expected, with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and about 5,000 VIP guests. The finale features the Rafale, Tejas and Surya Kiran.
Our suggestion: visit Kashi Vishwanath or walk the ghats early, before cordons and crowds build up.
Reach your vantage point and allow time for barricades and security screening. Late arrivals may find access closed.
Flypasts start over the Ganga, moving along the river from Namo Ghat toward Assi Ghat.
About 90 minutes of flying in all. The running order has not been announced, so expect surprises.
Exit routes are staggered. Have lunch near your vantage point rather than joining the rush to the roads.
Finish the day with the evening aarti. See our Ganga Aarti guide for timings and the best places to sit.
The line-up
About 100 aircraft from the IAF, Army and Navy. Which type flies when has not been announced.
Fast, low flypasts over the river. The Rafale, Tejas and Surya Kiran close the show.
A C-17-led flight leads into the Surya Kiran display.
Includes the flag-and-petals Omkar and the three-service Tridev formations.
Surya Kiran jets take off from Varanasi Airport; the other aircraft fly in from nearby bases.
The final line-up is decided by the IAF and may change.
Watch for these
Beyond the fast jets, the programme is built around formations with names from Kashi’s own heritage.
The IAF’s Surya Kiran aerobatic team flies Hawk jets in tight, tricolour-trailing formations. The team has performed at more than 800 shows worldwide. At Varanasi, a formation of nine Hawks, following a C-17-led flight, precedes the team’s display.
Look up for the arrowhead shapes, mirror passes and loops — and, if the trails are released, the saffron, white and green smoke.
Three Mi-17 helicopters carry the national flag and shower flower petals.
A joint formation of Army, Navy and Air Force helicopters showing three-service coordination.
A Globemaster-led flight, followed by nine Hawks, introduces Surya Kiran.
The Rafale, Tejas and Surya Kiran close the show.
How each of these six formations is made up has not been announced.
Where it happens
The display is centred on Namo Ghat, the modern riverfront that opened in November 2024. The aircraft fly low over the Ganga from Namo Ghat toward Assi Ghat, passing above many of Varanasi’s 84 ghats.
Choose your spot
From the free ghat-side steps to a terrace with a sky view, here are your options.
The flight corridor follows the ghats between Rajghat and Assi Ghat, so those riverfront steps are the natural free vantage points.
A grandstand, spectator galleries, VIP zones and a media arena are being set up near Namo Ghat. About 5,000 guests are expected on the main day.
Some ghat-side stays have terraces with an open sky view, away from the street crush. Ask before you book which side the terrace faces.
A live stream is planned for each display day. Watch the IAF and government channels for the live link.
River boat services and the Rajghat bridge are closed during rehearsals and displays for safety. Please do not pay for a “show view” boat.
Namo Ghat and other cordoned zones are under Air Force and police control. Do not push ahead for a better view, and do not climb walls, roofs or trees.
Before you go
Nothing here should surprise you on the day. Restrictions can change at short notice, so check again before you leave.
Restrictions in place
Photography tip. Jets cross the frame in seconds. Use burst mode, a fast shutter (about 1/1000 s or quicker) and pre-focus on the river; on a phone, record video and pull stills from it. Keep your camera ready before noon and respect any no-photography instructions.
Make it a proper trip
Getting to Varanasi is easy; getting around on display days is not. Sort your stay and transport early.
The whole city will be busy, and ghat-side rooms go first. A stay close to the ghats keeps you out of the worst diversions.
Hotel near the ghatsExpect diversions near the riverfront. A local driver who knows the day’s closures saves hours.
