About Varanasi

Varanasi (also called Kashi or Banaras) sits on the western bank of the Ganga in Uttar Pradesh and is regarded as one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. It's the spiritual heart of Hinduism — pilgrims come for darshan at the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, to bathe in the Ganga, and to watch the evening Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat.

Beyond the ghats and temples, Varanasi is also known for Banarasi silk sarees, classical music and the nearby Buddhist site of Sarnath, where Gautam Buddha gave his first sermon. Most visitors base themselves near the ghats and explore on foot, by cycle-rickshaw, or by boat.

Best Time to Visit Varanasi

October to March is the most comfortable time to visit — cool mornings and evenings, ideal for ghat walks and boat rides. April to June gets very hot (well over 40°C some days), and July to September is the monsoon, when the Ganga can rise close to the ghats.

If you want to see the city at its most festive, plan around Dev Diwali (Kartik Purnima, the full moon after Diwali), when all 84+ ghats are lit with diyas — see our Dev Diwali boat booking page. Varanasi is also a common stop for pilgrims travelling to and from the Mahakumbh at Prayagraj — check the important Mahakumbh snan dates if your trip lines up with it.
