Boat Ride in Varanasi: What to Expect
A boat ride in Varanasi is the best way to understand the city. From the middle of the River Ganga the ghats rise in a long line of steps, temples and old palaces, and the whole waterfront is in view at once. On the steps people bathe, pray, practise yoga and sell flowers; on the river the boats move slowly past.
Most visitors choose between two rides. A sunrise boat ride is quiet and bright, with the ghats waking up. An evening boat ride ends in front of the Ganga Aarti, watched from the water. Either one takes about two hours by motor boat.

Best Time for a Boat Ride in Varanasi
A boat ride is possible through the year. These are the seasons.
October to March
Best season
Cooler, clear days and comfortable evenings. Both the sunrise and the evening ride are at their best, and Dev Diwali falls in November.
April to June
Go early
Hot days. Choose the sunrise ride, carry water and a hat, and keep midday for the hotel.
July to September
River in flood
The Ganga rises in the rains and boating can be restricted when the water is high. We confirm with you before the ride.
