According to published accounts, the Nehru family's original house on this site was donated by Motilal Nehru to the Indian National Congress in 1930 and renamed Swaraj Bhavan, which today stands as a separate memorial on the same grounds. Anand Bhavan itself was built afterward as the family's new residence, and it remained associated with the family — including Jawaharlal Nehru and his daughter, Indira Gandhi, who would go on to become Prime Minister herself — for decades after.
