Naimisharanya, on the banks of the Gomti river in Sitapur district, Uttar Pradesh, is a forest pilgrimage town revered in Hindu tradition as the place where 88,000 rishis gathered for a long yajna, during which the sage Suta Goswami narrated the Puranas. Its name is linked to the “Nemi” — the rim — of Lord Vishnu’s discus, said to have fallen here and formed the wheel-shaped tank now known as Chakra Tirtha.
