Varanasi Sightseeing by Cab: How the Day Works
Varanasi is easy to see badly and hard to see well. The sights are spread across the old city, the southern ghats and temples, the university campus and Sarnath, and the lanes around Kashi Vishwanath are closed to vehicles, so the last stretch is always on foot. A cab and a driver who knows the city takes care of everything else.
You hire the cab for a full day, with the time shown in the fare table, and choose the stops. Most visitors combine the Kal Bhairav, Kashi Vishwanath and Annapurna temples in the morning, the southern temples and BHU before noon, Sarnath in the afternoon and the evening Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat.

The old-city temples
Kal Bhairav, Kashi Vishwanath and Annapurna are close together in the old city, and the traditional order is Kal Bhairav first. Vehicles stop outside the pedestrian zone, so this stretch is on foot.
The southern temples
The Durga Temple and Sankat Mochan are best in the morning, and the Tulsi Manas Mandir is close to the Durga Temple.
BHU and Sarnath
Drive through the Banaras Hindu University campus and the New Vishwanath Temple, then go on to Sarnath, where the Buddha gave his first sermon.
The evening aarti
End at the river for the Ganga Aarti. Arrive early for a place on the steps, at least 45 minutes before the start.
Ramnagar Fort
The 18th-century fort of the Maharaja of Banaras is on the far bank of the Ganga and is easy to add to the day.

- Extra hours or kilometres beyond the time shown are charged extra. A Force Cruiser is ₹100 for each extra hour or km (minimum 16 km); ask for the other vehicles.
- Phones and cameras are not allowed inside Kashi Vishwanath and Sankat Mochan, so leave them in the cab or at the hotel and travel light.

A Full Day of Varanasi Sightseeing

Early morning: the old city
Start at Kal Bhairav, then Kashi Vishwanath and Annapurna. This is the busiest part of the city, so early is best.
Late morning: south of the city
The Durga Temple, the Tulsi Manas Mandir and Sankat Mochan, then BHU and the New Vishwanath Temple.
Afternoon: Sarnath
About 10 km from the city: the Dhamek Stupa, the Deer Park and the museum. The museum keeps its own days and hours.
Evening: the river
Return for the Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat, or watch it from a boat. Boat rides are booked separately.
