About Bodh Gaya

Bodh Gaya, in the Indian state of Bihar, is where Gautam Buddha is believed to have attained enlightenment while meditating under a Bodhi Tree — making it one of Buddhism's four most important pilgrimage sites, alongside Lumbini, Sarnath and Kushinagar.

At its centre is the Mahabodhi Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site built around a descendant of the original Bodhi Tree, with the Vajrasana ("Diamond Throne") marking the exact spot of enlightenment. Around it, several countries have built their own monasteries and temples in their native architectural styles.
