The essentials
Famous Places to Visit in Bodh Gaya
Bodh Gaya, in Bihar, is where Gautama Buddha is believed to have attained enlightenment while meditating under a Bodhi Tree — making it one of Buddhism’s four most important pilgrimage sites, alongside Lumbini, Sarnath and Kushinagar. At its centre is the Mahabodhi Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site inscribed in 2002.
This guide covers the Mahabodhi Temple and the two places most visitors combine it with: the 80-foot Great Buddha Statue, consecrated by the Dalai Lama in 1989, and the cluster of international monasteries — Thai, Japanese, Tibetan and Chinese — built around the temple. Each visitor guide explains what the place is, its timings, how to reach it and what to see nearby.
Most visitors give Bodh Gaya one full day. The most comfortable season is October to March; Buddha Purnima is the most significant festival here but also by far the busiest time to visit.
